Thousands of race fans saw exciting action Saturday as the Showdown at Sundown, part of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, ran at Maple Grove Raceway. As racing finished under the lights on a beautiful starry night, two rounds of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car were completed with the finals to be concluded Sunday.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, DJ Cox (Whiteford, MD) will face Mathew Gill (Brockton, MA). Cox ran a semi-final 5.557 ET at 260.21 mph with a reaction time of .036, beating Todd Veney (Indianapolis, IN) who ran a 5.546 at 264.13 with a .068 reaction time.
Gill won his semi-final against Mickey Ferro (Stamford, CT) when Ferro DQ’ed by crossing the center line. Gill ran a 8.968 at 95.68 mph with a .080 reaction time.
Top Alcohol Dragster will see Duane Shields (Boulder City, NV) take on Jeff Veale (Stoney Creek, ON) in the finals. Shields made his semi-final pass of 5.417 at 272.34 and a .087 reaction time, while his competition Karen Stalba (Hammonton, NJ) ran a 6.061 at 188.28 with a .113 reaction time.
The other semi-final saw Veale run a 5.383 at 270.10 with a .035 reaction time best Rich McPhillips (Phoenixville, PA) who ran a 6.661 at 146.57 with a .059 reaction time.
Also on hand for the Showdown at Sundown were the Hanna Jet Funny Cars. The Top Secret Eastern Raider, piloted by Ken Hall, had a first run of 5.772 ET at 277.32 mph and a reaction time of .038. Rich Hanna, driving the Gojo Firebird Jet Funny Car, posted at 5.778 ET at 273.22 mph and a reaction time of .046. Round 2 saw Hall run a 5.692 at 280.72 with a .053 reaction time, while Hanna posted a 5.707 at 275.84 and a .024 reaction time.
Not to be outdone, Ernie Bogue took the Jersey Thunder Jet Dragster down the track in his first run of 5.538 at 280.54 mph and a reaction time of .059. His second run was a 5.399 at 288.27 and a .090 reaction time.
Sunday will see the completion of all classes. Gates open at 8am, with eliminations to begin at 9am. Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car finals will be at 12 noon.
